Mental Health Awareness

 

   
 

Mental illness is common.  1 in 4 of us will experience mental health problems at some time in our lives.  It is surrounded by prejudice, myths and misunderstandings.  Any staff that come into contact with the public / service users who have mental health problems need a basic understanding of the types of illnesses, services, treatments available and an increased awareness.

Course Content
  • Classification / Types of Mental Illness
  • The signs and symptoms of the major illnesses (Anxiety, Depression, Schizophrenia, Bi-polar Affective Disorders, Personality Disorder, Dementia)
  • Services available (statutory & voluntary)
  • Treatments (physical and psychological)
  • An outline of the 1983 Mental Health Act (Plus 2007 update) - if requested
  • Care for the Caretaker (staff support)
 
Accommodation Requirements
  • Room large enough for all participants free from interruptions.
  • Refreshments (Tea / Coffee) for break time
  • Screen / clear wall for projection
  • Handouts (I will provide)
  • Laptop / projector (I can provide if needed or will use facilities available)


    Course outcomes

    By the end of the session participants will have a greater understanding of the types of mental health problems which will improve their ability to interact with clients and improve communication.  They will have a basic understanding of the classifications / treatments and awareness of the Mental Health Act.
